In June 2022, the Indian Premier League (IPL) sold its broadcasting rights for the period between 2023 and 2027 for a whopping ₹48,390 crore (US$6.1 billion). This sale established the IPL as the second-most expensive tournament in the world, surpassing even the English Premier League and second only to the National Football League. As part of the agreement, Star Sports retained its television contract, while Viacom18 acquired exclusive streaming rights. The matches will be streamed online in 4K (Ultra HD) for the first time ever, and will be available for free through the Jio Cinema mobile app in India. The app will allow viewers to switch camera angles, commentary language, and graphics language, with options available in English, Hindi, Marathi, Bangla, Bhojpuri, Odia, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
Fans in the United Kingdom can watch the IPL on DAZN, while Sky Sports Cricket will stream only 16 matches. In the United States, Willow TV is scheduled to air the matches on television, while ESPN+ will provide online streaming. Super Sport and Yupp TV will telecast the IPL in South Africa and Sri Lanka, respectively. Radio Television Afghanistan will air the matches in Afghanistan. Rush TV will telecast the IPL in Guyana, and the Enet application will stream the matches online on a free-to-air basis.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced several new rules for the upcoming league season. Among these new rules, fielding sides will be penalized with five runs if any fielder or wicketkeeper makes an unfair movement, and the delivery on which it occurred will be declared dead by the on-field umpire. Additionally, captains will be allowed to declare their playing XI and impact player list after the toss, enabling them to select players according to the prevailing playing conditions.
Furthermore, if a team fails to bowl their overs within the allocated time, they will be restricted to having only four fielders outside the 30-yard area. Another notable change is that teams can now use the Decision Review System (DRS) to review wides and no-balls, a rule that was previously introduced in the Women’s T20 Challenge.
In a new addition to the league, the BCCI has also introduced an “Impact Player” rule. Each team will be allowed to name four substitutes, or impact players, in their squad for a match, in addition to the starting XI. One of these players may be used as a substitute during the match, providing teams with greater flexibility and tactical options. These new rules are likely to add an exciting dimension to the league and keep fans engaged throughout the season.
In a series, Shikhar Dhawan was appointed as the new captain of Punjab Kings in November 2022, replacing Mayank Agarwal. Anil Kumble also stepped down from his position as head coach of the team, with Trevor Bayliss taking over the role.
In August 2022, Chandrakant Pandit replaced Brendon McCullum as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders, while Sunrisers Hyderabad opted for a change in leadership by replacing Tom Moody with Brian Lara as their head coach.
Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, promoted Mahela Jayawardene to a strategic role in the franchise and recruited former South African cricketer Mark Boucher as their coach for the 2023 season.
The much-awaited IPL auction took place on 23 December 2022 in Kochi, with teams making strategic moves to strengthen their squads. The most expensive player in the auction was England’s Sam Curran, who was bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping ₹18.50 crore (approximately US$2.3 million), making him the most expensive player in the history of the league.
Overall, these personnel changes and auction purchases are expected to bring new energy and tactics to the various teams and create an exciting season for fans to look forward to.
